Day 22, Moyale

A very early rise to ensure bus seats. It was an easier "rush" this time as we set off by 5.30 am. It was a mix of scenery - starting off green and dense but soon arid and sparse. Lots of red clay soil plains and big termite mounds. Some primitive village dwellings and more tribal attire. They seemed less friendly except a couple of girls on the bus who showed real interest. Our hot and squashed journey ended by 2.00 pm. Our border crossing was simple. Moyale looked like a dive as we set to bargain for flights onto Nairobi. No luck, so we settled for a truck lift, while sick boys splashed out for comfort. Quick spaghetti feed, settled into a simple hotel.

Day 21, Dila

Our patients were feeling better and so we decided to hit the road. More omelette and juice for breakfast before a walk to the station. Awasa people appear more affluent and town more cosmopolitan. We only travelled 100 km but it was a slow journey with a delayed start until it was full, one blowout and lots of pick ups. Scenery was more green with dense bush (and less interesting), road was relatively good compared with northern tracks. Arrived in small Dila about 3.00 pm and relaxed in our hotel. No restaurants in town so ended eating hot suspect "fish what" with injera at our hotel. Another black out. Room had too many cockroaches for my liking!

Day 20, Awasa

How plans can change! The others got the bus times wrong (Ethiopian time, not western). Meantime, Cooch had been diagnosed with malaria as well. Dropping like mossies and not even many in sight. So just Kev and Kim set off for the Kenyan border. Me and Marty got tested for peace of mind. Did a drug run for the poorly ones and relaxed the rest of the day - feeling a little lethargic and achy (and paranoid!) A good warm shower helped before returning to the same restaurant and getting served just before a power cut. Lots of optioned tabled re rehab time, flying options - time will tell.

Can't be complacent about malaria! Cookie's clinic check after an overnight fever taught us all that! More health concerns and a couple more days in Awasa for rehab. Had a nice lakeside walk before a hill climb to view the town and lake, then watched some huge marabou stork near fisher boys on the lake shore. We also saw herons, hamerkops, hornbills etc (and some monkeys). Town folk ignored us more - maybe due to lack of English. A very lazy afternoon reading out of the sun. Another big feed at some restaurant. Warmer at nights now. Said goodbyes while me and Marty stay with Cookie to catch up later on.

Day 18, Addis Ababa - Awasa

More entertaining confusion at the bus station. Boarding is 'predatory' and bus fumes everywhere. It was a cramped trip through the Rift Valley Lake region. Some nice (more African) views of valley plains, acacia trees, birds and locals. Stopped for bread and banana lunch. Arrived in Awasa 2.30 pm and argued over luggage and a taxi. Settled at nice Unique Park and relaxed in the sun with a few 25 p beers - more like a holiday! Walked into town for nice, bug, cheap fish feast. Witnessed a wedding celebration at our hotel - dancing, singing, horns. First time with mosquito nets in our nice single rooms (with toilet seats!).
