Day 117, Johannesburg....

Up with the rain on this local holiday and set off with Adolf for our morning tour of Soweta. We drove 20 minutes south and viewed mining communes, high and middle class living areas, before walking through the lower class Mandela townships. It was third world structure and amenities, yet crowded locals were reasonably clean and well dressed. Also viewed Winnie's house, Tutu's residence and Nelson's house pre-prison. Interesting tour indeed but not too dissimilar from other slums. Went to airport early and spent R's in bar with ex-pat Kiwi's we met. Long trip ahead, watched three movies, had little sleep. Good to return, yet sad to end our awesome adventures!

Day 116, Johannesburg

Very lazy morning with breakfast, TV, and newspapers occupying us until about 1.00 pm, when we decided to set off on a walk to Burma district. We wandered past rough black homes followed by nice, fortified middle class areas for an hour until lunching at McD's. Looked around the huge flea market then large Eastgate Shopping Mall before taxiing home. Interesting look around the inequalities and predominantly black suburbs. Watched TV and enjoyed another steak braai, before a quiet night in front of the TV watching enjoyable movie, "English Patient". Interestingly set in familiar Egypt.

Day 115, Pretoria - Johannesburg

It was a lazy morning at Anton's. After a big breakfast and some kitchen chores, I did some emailing and packing up. Anton shouted pizza for lunch before driving down a motorway lined with administrative offices to Johannesburg. Checked in to Rockey Street hostel then headed to dingy part of town to mighty Ellis Park. Watched a Five Nation win for Poms then soaked up atmosphere in the impressive arena. It was an exciting match until Otago sneaked a late win thanks to Culhane. Locals were very parochial, almost intimidating. Said bye to Anton and Marty, and Cooch and I went for drinks near hostel. Only white boys in first a café, then jazz bar, night club.

Day 114, Hazyview - Pretoria

Another early morning treat of Super 12 - but a disappointing Canterbury performance. We left for Pretoria discussing New Zealand rugby problems and drove initially along good motorways up to the high veld. More fast food was devoured in small town of Belfast before our remaining two hour drive in periodically intense heat to pretty Pretoria streets. Visited the stately government buildings (home to government half of each year) then toured Loftus Versfeld and were impressed by its form and its importance. Landed a 50 metre barefoot place kick with ease on B field during a run around. Got lost on our way to Anton's but enjoyed big braai and catch up yarns.

Day 113, Kruger National Park - near Hazyview

Another very early start and disappointing morning drive - views were impaired by long grass and dense shrub. After our breakfast stop we saw some regular game - zebra, giraffe, loads of impala. We drove north to more lucrative terrain after stopping for lunch - encountering some showers and some hot spells. Late in the day we were rewarded with two sleeping lions - a highlight of the day, along with more injured zebras, a giraffe wandering past our car, and roadside elephants. Lots of scenery, but dispersed. Drove 90 minutes through rain, poor roads, back to Hazyview for pie for tea, game of pool and bed.
